There are four main stages of healing through massage:
relief, correction, strengthening, and maintenance. |
|
- Relief - The first few sessions of massage therapy will be aimed to relieve pain, reduce muscle tension and relax stressed nerves. The relief sessions are aimed at the symptoms of the problem.
- Correction - When the pain is gone, the therapist will work on the problem that caused the pain. Techniques will be aimed at stimulating your lymphatic system and freeing knotted and scarred muscle fibers.
- Strengthening - Strengthening is important in a badly damaged area. Weakness at the injury site can mean recurring problems. Techniques will be aimed at strengthening the tissues near the injury enabling them to provide adequate support when the injury is healed.
- Maintenance - Maintenance is the final stage in healing and the first step in preventing other injuries. Maintenance techniques are aimed at treating the problem and preventing the occurrence of new problems.
Precautions - Massage is not recommended for certain people:
- infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds
- immediately after surgery
- immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
- prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage
- pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a massage. Massage in pregnant women should be done by massage therapists who are certified in pregnancy massage.
- massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures.
Additional Tips
- don’t eat a heavy meal before the massage
- if it's your first time at the clinic or spa, arrive at least 10 minutes early to complete the necessary forms.
- Otherwise, arrive 5 minutes early so you can have a few minutes to rest and relax before starting the massage.
The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.
Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.
Swedish massage techniques include: long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration, effleurage, and shaking motions. The usually sequence of techniques are:
1. Effleurage: Gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs and/or fingertips
2. Petrissage: Kneading movements with the hands, thumbs and/or fingers
3. Friction: Circular pressures with the palms of hands, thumbs and/or fingers
4. Vibration: Oscillatory movements that shake or vibrate the body
5. Percussion: Brisk hacking or tapping
6. Passive and active movements: Bending and stretching
Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being.
Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
Deep tissue massage is used to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles not with the grain. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. However, if the massage is done correctly you should feel better than ever within a day or two. It feels good and it is beneficial to your health.
When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. Because many toxins are released, it's important to drink plenty of water after a deep-tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.
The purpose is to "unstick" the fibers of a muscle while releasing deeply-held patterns of tension, removing toxins, while relaxing and soothing the muscle. It is both corrective and therapeutic.
Stone massage is a unique connection we experience with nature, offering a sense of profoundness and sacredness that we too often forget. It's a deep healing and unique moment that enhances our awareness and brings us closer to our true essence. It is the perfect treatment that is as enjoyable and healing for the client as it is for the practitioner.
Stone massage involves the application of water-heated basalt stones of varying sizes to key points on the body, giving a deep massage and creating sensations of comfort and warmth. The direct heat relaxes muscles, allowing manipulation of a greater intensity than with regular massage. In cases of muscular injury and inflammation, frozen, cooling marble stones are used. This creates a type of thermotherapeutic 'vascular gymnastics' in the circulatory system to help the body detoxify and heal. The warmer stones expand the blood vessels, pushing blood and unwanted waste materials through the body. This has a sedative effect on the nervous system. The cold stones cause the blood vessels to constrict, stimulating the nervous system and drawing blood and waste products along the body. This ensures that every cell in the body receives more oxygen and nutrients while at the same time waste material is removed more effectively through the corresponding increase in lymph flow. Not unlike changing the old oil and filter in your car for a newer filter with clean oil—a service for the body.
It is quite an experience to feel the deeply relaxing, penetrating heat from the basalt stones alternating with the toning and refreshing coolness of the marble stones. The use of extremes of temperature has long been scientifically and medically proven to be of benefit to the body. Those who wish to relax and tone their muscles with a minimum of effort see this in the use of ice packs for muscle trauma and the use of saunas. Those experiencing a hot stone massage will notice a healing improvement of the following symptoms:
|
- Muscular aches, pains, sprains, and strains
- Poor circulation
- Rheumatic and arthritic conditions
- Fibromyalgia
- MS
- Back pain
- Stress, anxiety and tension
- Insomnia
- Depression

Acuassage is an ancient Chinese technique based on the principles of acupuncture, and involves the use of finger pressure (without the needles) on specific points along the body. It is is a way of accessing and releasing blocked or congested energy centers in the body. Chinese cultures believe the points to be junctures of meridian pathways that carry energy called chi. Western scientists have also mapped out and proven the existence of these points using electrical devices. Acuassage therapy stimulates and activates the body's own energies to help fight illness and restore harmony. Some of the Acupressure points are significant and relate to a specific part of the body while others are more general in their effect. Various ailments such as tension and stress, aches and pains, arthritis or menstrual cramps can be alleviated. Acupressure can also be used for general preventive health care.
The purpose of acupressure is to stimulate the body's own recuperative powers by stimulating the various points on the body. The stimulation removes energy blockages by diffusing the toxic build up that accumulates in the muscle tissue. The accumulation of toxins causes stiffness throughout the body. Stiffness in muscles puts abnormal pressure on nerves, and blood and lymph vessels. The pressure on blood and lymph vessels affect both skeletal systems and internal organ functioning. Acuassage is usually given in a similar fashion to traditional massage. Points on the body are massaged using finger or thumb, and sometimes a blunt object, in a fairly rapid circular motion with a medium pressure. Some of the most common techniques are: Rubbing, Kneading, Percussion and Vibration. Fingers, hands, elbows, knees and feet are often used to massage other parts of the body.
Acupressure can help alleviate:
Pain, headaches, migraines, insomnia, depression, toothache, dizziness, menstrual pain, digestive disorders including diarrhea and constipation, nausea, morning sickness, motion sickness, stress and tiredness.
Also called Champissage, Is based on Ayurvedic techniques that was brought to the western world by Narendra Mehta. IHM focuses on the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp, and face. It is a very non-invasive technique, but is very different from a chair massage, or the normal scalp massage.
IHM is good for people that are ‘desk bound’ or ‘mental thinkers’, can be beneficial to alleviate stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraines, sinusitis, and can increase mental clearness, promotes relaxation. It is good for Thin hair clients which normally hold tension in the scalp which cuts off the blood flow that nourishes the hair follicles. IHM works by manipulating the skin and muscles giving all the benefits of a traditional massage, and working on the marmas or energy points of the acupressure points in the shoulders, arms, hands, neck, ears, and head.
A massage chair is a chair specifically designed to apply pressure and provide pain relief to the muscles and will to simulate relaxation. The therapists use their thumbs and palms for Swedish techniques, and elbow or stones for deep tissue. There are many benefits of using a massage chair. Some of the most common benefits are:
- Deep relaxation and stress reduction.
- Relief of muscle tension and stiffness.
- Reduced muscle spasm and tension.
- Greater joint flexibility and range of motion.
- Increased ease and efficiency of movement.
- Promoted deeper and easier breathing.
- Better circulation of both blood and lymph fluids.
- Reduced blood pressure.
- Relief of tension-related or eyestrain headaches.
- Faster healing from pulled muscles and sprained ligaments.
- Chair massages focus on the upper torso of the body. Normally the entire back, neck, and arms, but can be customized and focused on certain areas that are in need of attention.
Chair Massage is the preferred Event and Party Massage method. The Client does not have to get undressed, and the massage can be based on a per minute time frame. 10-15 minutes are normal for just relaxing. 20-30 minutes for deep tissue.
